Louisiana's
Giant Salvinia Problem |
|
| Giant Salvinia has
been found in Toledo Bend and in other parts of Louisiana. This aggressive
non-native plant flourishes in Louisiana's warm, fertile waters and can cover large areas
in just a few weeks. Efforts are being made to eliminate infestations and to stop the
spread of this freshwater nuisance. Fisherman and boaters can play a role in controlling the spread of salvinia and other exotics. The key is to prevent the transport of salvinia into other waters. Always inspect the inside and outside of your boat and trailer for any plant material before leaving the boat ramp. This includes cleaning the livewells, and intakes, inspecting prop guards, trolling plates, transducers, anchor and anchor rope, and even inspecting fishing tackle. |
