 Michigan Fishing
Southeast Louisiana

New to New Orleans
I'm starting school at Tulane this fall and haven't fished the Ocean or the south before, let alone New Orleans. I'm from Michigan so I imagine it'll be fairly different fishing. Any insight is appreciated.

LA Fish

welcome to LA. First step, get a license . Second step, go get yourself a spinning reel and rod combo. For salt water one that uses 14 lb test line is probably the most versatile. For basic saltwater tackle the formula is really simple: 1 pack of 1/4 oz jig heads, 1 pack of 1/2 oz jig heads (get black, red,or white heads-your choice), then buy about 4 packs of soft plastic tails. For the tails, almost all of them will work. I like to have 1 clear w/sparkles, 1 chartruse, 1 black with yellow stripe, and 1 smokey colored. Some people may add a cork to the list, but I usually don't carry one. If you are feeling unlucky you can add a peice of dead shrimp to the hook. After that, travel the roads of south Louisiana and jump out the car and cast at any place that looks good. Oh, and read LA Sportsman magaziine and online for the best tips.
