possible state record Tarpon released in Port Royal Sound

Giant Tarpon

Here's a good one for you to take a look at. Not really sure just how big this fish is but I beleive that we released a possible state record tarpon in Port Royal Sound this past August. Fellow charer captains from the North End Charter Fleet have estimated the fish to be around 180lbs or better. What do you think?

Federal Waters OPEN and we went to investigate!

Whatcha know last person that WhipaSnapa Charter Boat got to take out in the federal waters, would be the first to go when it opened back up!!! Yea, Mr. David Lambert had a lil inshore trip set up, but with the federal waters opening he decided that was were he belonged. So, hey lets do the dang thang!!!
Boy, it was great as we rounded the end of east Horn Island, da ol'mighty orange one was peeking up over the horizon an Capt. was grinning from ear to ear. South bound baby!!
So soon, man can you believe it, just weeks ago we thought it would be years. Our first stop, second, third, and fourth and so on, found that the snapper were in fine shape. Maybe, just a tad ..... Read More

White Marlin Frenzy

The summer offshore fishing has been incredible for the crew of Billfisher, a 62-foot Paul Spencer based in Ocean City, Md. They achieved 200 marlin releases in 32 days of fishing, including a new record 57 white marlin released on Aug. 30 when a fleet of nine sportfishers left Sunset Marina, and caught and released 267 white marlin during the all-day fishing frenzy.

“We went 57 for 85 on white marlin bites, and we fished nothing but small naked ballyhoo rigged on 8-ought Eagle Claw circle hooks,” said Capt. Jon Duffie, who runs his family’s boat as a charter operation.

REEL LIFE Fishing

On friday I had the pleasure of taking Capt Will Wall and his best buddies fishing Cocodrie style. First up was the mangroves and they didn't disapoint us at all. We stacked 35 in the box pretty quick and decided to go deep to catch some jacks and any odd ball fish we could find. We were supposed to go deep dropping but it seems Capt Hunter slept in with all of the deep drop equipment. No worries because the farther south we went the rougher it got. First stop in Wonderland and the fishing was slow. We managed one silk snapper and a few red porgies. We decided to go to some rigs and see if the AJ's were biting there. After a few breakoffs mostly baracuda's we hook into a nice jack and get ..... Read More

Capt Gray Long- Go Long Charters

Late report from Sunday/Monday. Had the pleasure of having Todd, Pete, Peter, Mark, Dave & the rest of the gang aboard the Gray Goose for the second time. These guys can fish! They are jigging fools! The target was yellowfin. Well for some reason, the yellows that I was on last week had disappeared but we still managed to have a great trip. We ended the trip with 19 Big Blackfin, 1 small Mahi, a pile of jacks, a 60lb Warsaw and many other odds and ins. Did I mention that we did hook up on 2 Blue Marlin, landing one. The first one blew up right close to the rig and while Bradley and I were frantically getting a bait ready for him, Dave decided to test out his brand new Wombat ..... Read More

FYI for all my gulf fisherman

Reef Fish Committee is meeting as we speak. Here are some updates on the hot topics. Please remember that committee decisions are not final. Council meets on Friday to make final rulings on all committee suggestions.

Amberjack- The reef fish committee motioned to carry the Grater Amberjack regulatory action as is. That would establish a recreational seasonal closure from June 1st through July 31st. Council will take final action on Friday, and decide if they want to pass the motion.

Gag Grouper- A ..... Read More

Sailfish, Amberjacks and Snapers are the story of August so far. Usually in August there aren't that many sailfish around, as our season in November through May. I can only imagine how good the season will be this year having so many billfish in the off season! In addition to the unusually great billfishing, the bottom has been really hot! It has made trips super interesting because we have ..... Read More

East Bay

On the fence about a scheduled trip on Saturday to fish East Bay for Mangroves. Do any of you guys think it will be off condition due to this weak storm that passed? They are calling for 15-20MPH W/SW for Sat. with 2-3ft seas. I am a little skeptical about the 3 hour car drive and 45 minute boat ride; only to find sloppy or poor water conditions. What ya'll think? Oh, I forgot to mention about 40% chance of rain too. Any feedback might help me decide. thanks.

'REEL LIFE' Fishing

Here is the report for this past week. First up were Richard Wall and gang catching Amberjacks, mangrove snapper, and almaco jacks. We started off with the mangrove snapper and put 20+ in the box before running out to the deep for amberjacks and almacos. It was a great day with great people.

Next were Brannon Devillier and gang. They wanted tuna so we went long looking for them but only found one small yellow fin and one decent black fin. We then came inside a little and found a commercial boat on the spot that I wanted to fish. We fished it any way and Stacy caught a Fire Back grouper soon to be named by the experts trying to ID it. Also coming to the ice was a couple of chic dolphin, ..... Read More

Rip Line ???

Has there been a Rip Line any this year. I have not saw any reports about it. I have not fished this year due to the oil spill so I'm out of touch on the offshore fishing. Just maybe they will re-open Red Snapper season for those of us who did'nt get to fish at all this year and for the charter boats trying to make a living. Nobody hold their breath on that. Everyone needs to e-mail the gulf council on it.
