Caernarvon St. Bernard Caernarvon Project Overview - La. Coastal Restoration
St. Bernard State Park
Caernarvon is a small town located on the east bank of the Mississippi River in Plaquemines Parish.

The Caernarvon marsh consists of thousand of acres of intricate waterways that include areas such as Big Mar, Lake Lery, Grand Lake, Petit Lake, Lost Lake, Spanish Lake, Oak River, Sun Lagoon and a vast number of bayous and canals.

The marsh area on the east side of the Mississippi River has greatly benefited from the Caernarvon Freshwater Diversion Project which was completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1991. Allowing fresh water to once again feed the marshland, this project has dramatically improved the fishery in the entire region. The marshes of St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes are yielding tremendous numbers of good size largemouth bass.   Caernarvon offers incredible fishing for largemouth bass and all indications are that the best is yet to come.

Grand Isle State Park

Separating Barataria Bay from the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana's only inhabited barrier island  offers great  fishing and recreation opportunities.   Anglers can fish the surf for speckled trout year round.  Best catches occur during the spring and summer.  The fall and winter months produce good catches of redfish.  The 400 foot fishing pier at Grand Isle State Park is a great attraction for anglers who prefer not to fish directly in the surf.

The Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo held each July,  attracts thousands of fishing competitors.   Excellent deep-sea fishing trips are available from local charter services throughout the island.  The island offers excellent lodging accomodations and is a great place to spend a vacation.
