White perch are biting, and bass and bream action is picking up daily. We'll soon be tearing them up on fly rod.. and you can too!
The Red Stick Fly Fishers will be hosting their 13th annual conclave this Saturday, February 7, from 8:30 am to 4pm, at the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries' Waddill Wildlife Education Center on 4142 North Flannery Road in Baton Rouge. The event is free and open to the public. A conclave, in fly fishing terms, is a seminar featuring programs, tying, exhibits, casting, and other activities. It is the primary public service event used to educate the public about the sport of fly fishing. Our conclave will focus on all aspects of fly fishing, but primarily on the numerous opportunities for successful fly fishing here in Louisiana.
There will also be hands-on casting of various rods. And, for those interested in the exciting sport of canoe and kayak fishing, there'll be an opportunity to test ride different models.
Some of the nation's top fly anglers and fly tiers will be on hand. Speakers include Terry and Roxanne Wilson of Bolivar, MO, authors of books on fly fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegills, and other freshwater species; Sabine and Calcasieu Lakes guide Captain Chuck Uzzle; and kayak fishing specialist and editor for Onshore Offshore magazine, Chrystal Murray of Tarpon Springs, FL.
The tiers are highlighted by Sister Carol Anne Corley, of Hot Springs, AR, the renown "Tying Nun" whose appeared on ESPN and on the David Letterman show. Other featured tiers include Walt Holman of Boga, AL; Diane Blair of Dallas, TX, Ted Cabali of Metairie, LA, Mark Delaney of Lake Charles, LA, and Jerome and Dena Hebert of Henderson, LA.
Refreshments and a jambalaya lunch are provided free of charge, and there will also be a raffle featuring many fly fishing items and accessories.
RSFF will also be holding their banquet that evening at the Sheraton Downtown in Baton Rouge. The public is also invited to attend. There will be an auction to raise funds for the Carrie Lynn Yoder Scholarship Foundation. Miss Yoder, a close friend to several RSFF members, was a graduate student specializing in wetlands research at LSU, when she fell victim to the south Louisiana serial killer. Tickets for the evening event are $30 per person. Price includes dinner and entertainment. Reservations are required.
Information on these events, including reservations for the banquet, can be made through the Red Stick Fly Fishers web site at rsff.org, or by contacting Glen Cormier at (225) 938-2057 or Paula Cannon at (225) 252-7346.
